Greg Learmonth

Greg Learmonth is a Yorkshire artist who paints the everyday scenes in the village of Burley in Wharfedale where he lives in West Yorkshire. Also the surrounding area and the Yorkshire coast, exhibiting in a range of shows and producing a yearly calendar. His method is based on the techniques advocated by the French Impressionists, “I paint on raw canvas primed with clear gesso which gives me the rough texture I prefer and produces the effect I am looking for. I start making a quick sketch of the subject on the canvas in acrylic paint, usually in ultramarine. Then I block in the appropriate colours let it dry and then start painting thickly with confident impasto brush strokes and then after about five two hour sessions the painting is finished (obviously depending on the size of the canvas). People are constantly surprised when I tell them how fast I paint, which is possibly one of the reasons why I have been called “The Monet of Wharfedale”.”

Greg exhibits regularly both in group exhibitions and in one-man shows which are held three times a year in Burley in Wharfedale. He exhibits twice a year with Menston Art Club at Kirklands in Menston.
